Republicans filed suit against Bob Barr to remove him from the Pennsylvania ballot
US democracy at work. No matter what you think about this guy (you can certainly disagree with him on a number of issues), McCain’s tactic is a disgrace, not because it’s undemocratic, but because it’s worse than in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe where opponents remain on the ballots to the very end and the fun begins after the election. McCain and Republicans don’t seem that generous, but that’s the conservative party with Rovian tactics at its core, so no surprise there.

Gee, it looks like the GOP learned its lessons well, but you don’t have to look to Zimbabwe to find the teacher. Just ask Ralph Nader about what the Democrats did to keep him off the ballot in Pennsylvania four years ago.

The Democrats didn’t have to do anything to keep Nader off the ballot. He did it all himself. I was working on the Kerry campaign at the time in PA, and am very much not fond of Nader, but I still signed the petition to have him on the ballot because voters should have the right to vote for the candidate of their choice. The drive to get Nader on the ballot was not derailed by the Democrats. It failed because the Nader campaign was inept at handling the whole process. At every step they failed to take proper precautions to prevent the serious mistakes which gradually ruined his chances at appearing on the ballot. He has no one but himself, and his campaign to blame. As has been demonstrated time and again, his management style is shoddy and ineffective and he is frequently proven to be his own worst enemy in that regard.
